About this site

This website was developed to help San Francisco voters understand where they land in San Francisco's political landscap. Politics in SF are uniquely complicated. With nearly all elected officials identifying as Democrats, and over 60% of voters registered with the party, it's hard to differentiate between candidates, especially for obscure local offices like Assessor-Recorder. This goal of the site is to help voters understand what the local issues are, what the range of opinions are on those issues, and which candidates best align with their beliefs.

About the recommendations

Candidate recommendations are made using two sources of information:

  1. 1) User and candidate issue preferences
  2. 2) Endorsements from ideologically similar organizations

For each contest, candidates are ordered by similarity to the user's selected issue preferenes. Candidates are then ordered by number of endorsements from ideologically similar groups, and finally by whether candidates are "major" or not (likely to get a meaningful number of votes).

Ballot measure recommendations are made by finding the most common position of endorser organizations that are ideologically similar to the user
